Jake Tapper Rips Andrew Cuomo For Gloating On Jimmy Fallon: “No other state has lost as many lives, not even close”

Jake Tapper ripped New York Governor Andrew Cuomo after he took a gloating victory lap on Jimmy Fallon’s show last night.

Tapper said, “NY state has lost more than 32,000 lives to COVID-19. So while it’s great that the numbers have gone down, it’s perplexing to see crowing, Cuomo going on Fallon, etc.

No other state has lost as many lives, not even close. New Jersey is next with 17,000. Yes, this has been a major challenge for every leader, but New York’s leaders do not have a success story to tell. It’s been about missteps and late actions.

There have been institutional failures of government from the White House on down. Empirically New York is one of the biggest failures in the U.S.

There are many New York citizens put off by the crowing and the poster sales. It’s great that the number have gone down, and I hope to God they stay there. But New York’s leaders were late and made many mistakes; it’s been an absolute tragedy.”

From The New York Post:

Fallon is the first of the late-night hosts to return to the studio. He, Jimmy Kimmel, Trevor Noah, Samantha Bee and Stephen Colbert all turned to YouTube to entertain from home in mid-March.

After months of “At Home” editions of his show, Fallon interviewed Cuomo from a modified Studio 6A, where he and house band The Roots will continue to film with a limited crew, according to Deadline.

In their interview, Cuomo touted New Yorkers sticking to stay-at-home orders for “taming the beast” and bringing the COVID-19 infection rate down — as other states see surges in cases.

“We’re just worried the infections are going to come from the other states now, back to New York, and that would be a tragedy,” Cuomo said.

Fallon also quizzed the governor on his love life, asking him: “What phase of dating are you currently in?”

“Zero. I’m at phase zero on dating,” Cuomo replied, as Fallon laughed.

“There is no duration on phase zero … you could stay at phase zero for months,” Cuomo continued.

“I think New York will be fully reopened before I get out of phase zero on dating.”
